Isramart : Marshall Islands to UNFCCC: Information Note of 40% Reduction C02 Emissions by 2020

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Marshall Islands presents its compliments to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and has the honor to refer to Note No.82.B.8 of 30 December 2009 circulated by the Permanent Mission of Denmark to the United Nations regarding the Decision of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework: Convention on Climate Change of 19 December 2009 to 'take note' of the Copenhagen Accord of 18 December 2009 (Decision -/CR15).


Having considered the Copenhagen Accord in its entirety, the Ministry, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, wishes to indicate the Governrnent's willingness to be associated with the Accord, on the understanding that that the political progress captured therein will be translated into an internationally legally binding instrument or instruments under the UNFCCC to be adopted by the COP in 2010.

Such instrument(s) must contain internationally legally binding commitments and actions sufficient to safeguard the livelihoods and ensure the survival of those countries most vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change, including the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

"The Ministry has the further honor to request that the name of the Republic of the Marshall Islands be reflected in the chapeau of the Accord.
Regarding Appendix IT of the Accord, entitled ""Nationally appropriate mitigation actions of developing country Parties," the Cjovernment of the Republic of the Marshall Islands requests the following inscription:

Non-Annex I Republic of the Marshall Islands

40% reduction of C02 emissions below 2009
levels by 2020, pursuant to the 2009 National
Energy Policy and Energy Action Plan, and
with subject to the provision of adequate
international support.

The Ministry is providing a copy of this note to the UNFCCC Secretariat for informational purposes, and in response to its Notification to Parties of 18 January 201O, titled 'Communication of information relating to the Copenhagen Accord'.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Marshall Islands avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark the assurances of its highest consideration.
