The Port of Portland this week was honored by the federal Environmental Protection Agency for being among the top green power buyers in the nation.

The port of was one of only 10 organizations to receive a Green Power Leadership Award in the Green Power Purchase category.

The award recognizes EPA Green Power Partners that distinguish themselves through buying renewable energy from a green-pricing program, a competitive green marketer or a renewable energy certificate supplier.

The port — which ranks 49th on the EPA’s national Top 50 list of largest voluntary green power buyers — is buying more than 75 million kilowatt-hours of renewable power annually, covering all of its purchased power needs.

The resources come from on-site energy production installations, as well as from buying renewable electricity and renewable energy certificates from Florida-based NextEra Energy Resources and Portland-based Pacific Power.

The EPA also recognized the city of Corvallis and Intel Corp. for their green power buying.

The agency also announced that Portland has become the largest city to be named to the EPA’s list of Green Power Communities for efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
