Isra-mart srl news:

A British-based environmental economist visiting Wollongong says it inevitable Australia will have to transition towards a low carbon economy.

Senior research fellow at Oxford University, Dr Cameron Hepburn, gave the keynote address at yesterday’s New South Wales Minerals Council conference.

Dr Hepburn says Australia is lagging well behind other countries such as Europe, India, China and the United States in dealing with carbon emissions.

He says its is still debating the issue while most other countries already have carbon trading or tax schemes in place.

“In a big economic structural transition like this one there are going to be jobs lost and jobs created,” he said.

“We can face that fact in a cool headed way and think carefully about it, hopefully do it in a structured way, or we can ignore it and and wait until it hits us over the head later.”

Meanwhile, Wollongong-based Indian industrialist Arun Jagatramka says his home country is making great progress in introducing solar and wind power to reduce carbon emissions.

Mr Jagatramka’s company Gujarat NRE runs two mines in the southern coalfields that are set to expand.

He says in India coal mining is balanced out against low emission energy production.

“I think India leads the way on wind power. Even our company we have 87.5 megawatts of wind power in India and India has embarked on a big solar mission to put a very big stress on solar energy,” he said.
