Sustainability software firm CloudApps has today launched an application designed to ensure every employee in an organisation has access to environmental data and guidance on how to improve their green credentials.
Software capable of measuring a company's energy use and carbon footprint is increasingly popular in large organisations, which typically deploy such systems to help them comply with environmental regulations and shape their climate change strategies.
But according to CloudApps chief executive Simon Wheeldon, sustainability software packages typically concentrate the environmental data they collect within one department and struggle to encourage the wider business to adhere to environmental best practices.
Speaking to BusinessGreen, Wheeldon said the company's new Sustainability Momentum application, dubbed SuMo, would extend the reach of carbon software by deploying a small interface on each employees' desktop computer which provides them with real-time updates on their carbon footprint.
Trailed late last year, the application also shows how an individual or department is performing against the company's sustainability targets and provides them with updates on how colleagues are performing in an attempt to foster some healthy competition.
In addition, it provides tailored advice on how individuals can reduce their carbon footprint, through videoconferencing or car pooling, for example, and allows staff to submit suggestions on ways to improve the company's environmental performance.
"The release of SuMo will make sustainability an aspect of normal working life, in a way never before possible," said Wheeldon. "Anybody using a computer is reminded unsustainable work practices are a luxury businesses cannot afford... When every employee can make a small contribution to the wider energy-saving and waste-limitation initiatives, businesses will start to see running costs cut dramatically."
