Isramart: Zero-carbon towers await Manchester civil servants

The first views of Manchester’s proposed ‘green’ housing complex around Piccadilly Station were revealed this week.

The development includes zero-carbon ‘green’ housing for 5,000 civil servants from across the city and those relocating from London and the southeast.

The images show three main 12-storey towers, a public park, trees, sculptures and a path along a revamped River Medlock.

John Adams, partner at the firm project managing the development, said the venture will “transform” an area that is in significant need of regeneration.

“It will create a new gateway to the city with a world-class public realm,” he said, “delivering government carbon reduction commitments and Manchester’s action plan to become a leading low carbon city by 2020″.

Official details on the project, including the computer generated images, will go to public consultation in January. A feasibility report, which looks at the potential of the proposed campus, is due in February.

The Guardian reported last week that “tens of thousands” of Whitehall civil servants may be moved out of London under Labour plans to cut public debts.

The BBC already has plans to move several departments, including Radio Five Live and its children’s programming to Manchester’s Salford Quays in 2011.
