United Plantations to get 20 million kroner for reducing its carbon dioxide emissions
United Plantations, the plantation owner that last week was accused by dairy giant Arla of using dangerous pesticides at its sites in Malaysia, will reportedly soon receive a reward from the Danish Energy Agency for reducing its carbon dioxide emission.
Although the amount was undisclosed, Politiken newspaper reported that it will amount to an annual 20 million kroner over two years for the Danish-controlled, Malaysian-based company.
Several MPs and environmental groups were unhappy following the announcement as Arla last week warned United Plantations it will stop using its products if it carries on using dangerous pesticides that have reportedly caused rashes, breathing difficulties and nausea amongst its workers – conditions that have also worried the UN’s agricultural entity, the FAO.
Lykke Friis, the climate and energy minister, has suggested the award should be withheld until the firm has stopped using the pesticides. The Energy Agency has said that it will speak to the plantation about the accusations and investigate the matter if need be.
