Hutchison Ports UK Ltd (HPUK) has been awarded an environmental certificate by the Carbon Trust Standard for reducing its carbon emissions by 8.2% between 2007 and 2009.
To qualify for the award HPUK was required to demonstrate that its three ports, London Thamesport, Harwich International Port and the Port of Felixstowe, had robust carbon management systems in place.
The Carbon Trust Standard also required the ports to have documenting and reporting systems in place as well as a monitoring system, training, investments and carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction targets set by the organisation.
“Gaining certification with the Carbon Trust Standard is proof that HPUK has taken genuine action to reduce our direct impact on climate change by cutting carbon emissions,” said David Gledhill, chief executive officer of HPUK.
“It is a fitting recognition for the achievements made through company investment and general behavioural change across our ports,” commented Gledhill.
The Carbon Trust originally introduced the Standard in June 2008. It is awarded to companies that demonstrate good carbon reporting, management and reductions year-on-year.
“All the small actions employees have taken have contributed to getting the reduction needed, as well as significant investment in environmentally sound cranes and equipment, so we are justly proud of what we have achieved,” concluded Gledhill.
