Heathrow Airport has been recognised for its efforts to cut energy use with a new award.
The airport was awarded with the Carbon Trust Standard after saving enough energy in the last three years to power more than 6,300 homes for 12 months.
Heathrow Airport improved its carbon efficiency by 12 per cent, despite turnover increasing by 31 per cent.
Savings came from careful management of heating, cooling and ventilation in areas such as Heathrow Airport lounges, check-in areas and baggage pick-up points.
In addition, investment in renewable energy projects such as biomass generators is helping to make the airport's electricity supply greener.
BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said there was no "silver bullet" for reducing harmful emissions.
"This is the first step on a long road to helping the government meet the strict environmental targets which also form a core part of Heathrow's strategy," he added.
Heathrow Airport's new fifth terminal has reduced its energy consumption by 19 per cent since it opened.
Terminal 5 opened in March 2008, with additional Heathrow Airport parking built to cope with the extra demand.
