Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland (CCIQ) has urged all state governments to avoid rushing to act on carbon emissions as it will have a significant negative impact on business profitability and economic growth.
CCIQ President David Goodwin applauded Queensland’s Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Kate Jones for having the wisdom to hold off for a national decision and ruling out a state-based carbon pricing scheme in Queensland.
“It would be irresponsible for state governments to push for state based schemes just for appearances sake particularly when it is still unclear what action the Australian Government and most importantly the international community will take,” Mr Goodwin said.
“The business community has consistently argued against the implementation of a carbon pricing scheme until it is clear what direction the international community will take. Any early action will significantly disadvantage Australian industries.
“Accordingly the federal government’s decision earlier this year to postpone the introduction of the ETS was considered the right decision by the majority of Queensland businesses.”
