A new "Windmade" label carried by products manufactured using only wind power promises to revolutionise green shopping 23 years after the launch of the first Fair Trade mark.
Backed by businesses and conservation groups including WWF and wind turbine manufacturer Vestas, the label will be awarded only to producers that can pass a test confirming they use only wind power at their facilities.
Organisers of the scheme hope that those who successfully clear the certification hurdles could look forward to a significant boost in demand for their product from green consumers similar to that enjoyed by products carrying organic or Fair Trade labels.
According to recent figures, the green goods market in Europe alone is estimated to grow to €114bn (£95bn) over the next five years, as demand for environmentally friendly products continues to grow. Similar figures released by the Co-operative Group late last year revealed that the UK market for green goods has increased by 18 per cent over the past two years despite the effects of the economic slowdown.
Organisers have yet to decide the qualification criteria for the Windmade label, but are confident the scheme can help drive demand for wind power, potentially bringing down the cost of wind-generated electricity.
"We hope that this will create a strong element of consumer pull, which will accelerate the pace of wind energy development globally," Ditlev Engel, Vestas chief executive, told news agency Reuters.
