The Scottish government has today granted planning approval to a new 4.5MW hydro electric plant capable of generating enough power for around 2,500 homes.
The project at Maldie Burn, near Kylestrome, was proposed by RWE NPower Renewables in June 2009 and aims to build an intake weir at the site that will allow for the use of run-of-river technology to produce electricity.
Scottish Energy Minister Jim Mather hailed the project as further evidence that hydro electricity still "has an important role to play" in Scotland's energy sector despite the recent focus on wind and marine energy.
"This is another hydro development, following in Scotland's long and proud tradition, that generates green energy from our vast water resources," he said. "This scheme will power 2,500 homes, create a good number of construction jobs in a remote location and provide lasting community benefits."
RWE NPower Renewables said that the project is likely to create 35 jobs during the construction phase.
