Britain sold 4.4 million European carbon emissions permits at 15.46 euros ($21.62) a tonne in its fourteenth auction to date, the UK government said on Thursday.

The auction was 6.28 times over-subscribed and 27.633 million bids were received. The auction raised 68 million euros for the UK Treasury, raising total revenues to 845 million euros.

On France's BlueNext spot exchange BNXCO2-2 the permits, called EU Allowances, were down 7 cents or 0.45 percent at 15.45 euros a tonne at 0907 GMT.

Britain has auctioned 60.4 million permits since November 2008 and will auction another 17.6 million through March 2011.
