Giant biomass plant planned for Liverpool
RES Group proposes 150MW plant based at the city's port, but 80 per cent of wood feedstock expected to be imported
Renewable energy developer RES has unveiled plans for a £300m biomass plant at the Port of Liverpool.
The plant at Alexandra Dock could have a capacity of up to 150MW depending on the outcome of feasibility studies, and will use a mix of domestically sourced and imported wood chips, pellets or briquettes to supply electricity to between 170,000 and 250,000 homes. Around 80 per cent of the plant's fuel is expected to be brought in via the port.
RES said it will submit its proposals to the soon-to-be disbanded Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) and aims to secure approval by 2011, with a view to completing construction by 2015.
Johanna Doyle, project manager at RES, said: "We are delighted to make this announcement today and look forward to working with local and regional stakeholders to deliver this exciting project."
"The North West has a highly skilled workforce that we can draw upon and we will be using local contractors and service providers where possible," she added.
RES is also developing a concurrent biomass project at the Port of Blyth in Northumberland.
If planning approval is granted, the 100MW North Blyth Project should also be completed in 2015.
