The Carbon Trust is working with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) to improve efficiency in dealerships.
Under the agreement, the Carbon Trust will visit 30 car dealerships – of different types, sizes and ages across all major brands – and identify ways of saving energy.
The Carbon Trust says the project will save car sellers save over £6 million on annual energy bills and reduce carbon emissions by 50,000 tonnes a year. The sector as a whole currently account for around one million tonnes a year.
“Vehicle manufacturers have focussed heavily on improving the efficiency of their production facilities and cutting the emissions of their products, making increasingly significant progress. This project will ensure the same attention is paid to retail sites, improving the overall environmental performance of the industry,” says Paul Everitt, chief executive of SMMT.
The Carbon Trust says that in addition to the 5% savings on emissions, the project will find more opportunities to reduce energy use in the longer term, which could ultimately save a further £25 million a year on energy bills.
The findings from the project will be collated into a report that will be made available to the whole sector, providing tips and best practice guidance on reducing energy consumption.
