Isra-Mart srl:Opinion: Carbon tax is last thing we need in this country

Isra-Mart srl news:

In reference to the op-ed article by Dr. James E. Jones (Nov. 28) where he points out the supposed effects CO2 has on global warming, he states we should start with a carbon tax.

It must be noted that the major contributions to atmospheric CO2 come from burning coal. You can’t get away from producing CO2 when you “burn” coal. (Sequestering CO2 emissions has still to be proven cost-effective.

Electric generating plants run 24/7, 365 days a year, and coal generated 45 percent of the 4.1 million megawatts of electricity produced in the U.S. in 2008. In China, 70 percent of the electricity comes from coal.

Coal is plentiful and the U.S. holds the world’s largest reserves even though China produces more than twice as much as the U.S. each year.

Experts claim that the amount of electricity produced by coal is expected to increase through 2035. Besides “choking” on CO2, the other “dark side” of coal is lives lost on its extraction.

How many government employees and politicians will we need to oversee those who will assign carbon tax levies, collect the monies and rein in the scofflaws and distribute what’s left? It seems certain that low-wage earners will pay a higher percentage of their income to carbon taxes through the goods or energy they purchase.

The last thing any of us need is another tax from the state, federal or world government bodies.
