Voters may be persuaded to support a carbon tax if the federal government is true to its word and provides compensation to households, a new opinion poll suggests.

But as it stands, support is fading for the tax with more than 50 per cent of Australians against it.

Details of the government's price on carbon remain thin, other than the July 1, 2012 start date and the aim to move to an emissions trading scheme (ETS) in three to five years' time.

The government repeatedly has said it will provide compensation to households to soften the impact of the tax on big polluters.

An online Essential Research survey has found that 51 per cent of voters are against putting a price on carbon, up from 49 per cent two weeks ago.

Of the 1016 people surveyed, 34 per cent said they supported the tax, down from 38 per cent previously.

Still, 38 per cent said that if they were compensated by cutting income and increasing welfare payments they were more likely to support the proposed carbon tax.

Sixteen per cent said they were less likely to support the tax if compensated, while 35 per cent said it would make no difference.
