Bangladesh promised for pursuing a carbon efficient economy with the financial and technological support of the international community, reports BSS received from Bangkok Tuesday.
In the business scenario, Bangladesh's total emission is likely to increase nearly to 70 million tonnes by 2015 and 150 million tones by 2030. And, with the financial and technological support, Bangladesh plans to reduce at least one third of total carbon emission by 2030.
While presenting its Low Carbon Path of Development and Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) Tuesday, coordinator of Bangladesh climate change negotiating team Dr Quazi Khaliquzzaman Ahmad said technological and financial support are crucial for a least developed country like Bangladesh to pursue a low carbon growth.
In the Cancun Agreement developing countries agreed to take nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMA) in the context of sustainable development, supported and enabled by technology and finance. The agreement also asked the developed countries for development of modalities and guidelines for facilitation of support to NAMAs through a registry, measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) system.
Dr Khaliquzzaman said 55 to 60 per cent food production of Bangladesh depends on energy, and due to its agriculture-intensive economy, the energy demand for agriculture is on rise.
In this area the country cannot afford to compromise in the interest of food security of people, he said.
Co-chairs of the session Philip Gwage of Uganda and Maas Goote of the Netherlands as well as representatives of Switzerland, USA and Australia highly appreciated Bangladesh's endeavour for low carbon growth.
