A new report by the Wyoming State Geological Survey says an underground formation in southwestern Wyoming could hold as much carbon dioxide as 50 years of emissions from two large coal-fired power plants.
The purpose would be to keep carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere so it doesn't contribute to climate change.
The publication on the Rock Springs Uplift summarizes two years of research. State Geologist Ron Surdam says the research has huge implications for Wyoming coal because electric utilities using coal will likely face a choice: Either capture carbon dioxide or switch to cleaner fuel sources.
Wyoming is the nation's top coal-producing state and has been active in promoting underground storage of CO2.
