Isramart : Data centre industry debates carbon reduction

Isramart news:
The UK data centre industry is facing environmental legislation on two separate grounds, with both the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) and Climate Change Agreement (CCA) looking to have a major impact on greening the IT industry in the coming years.

A conference is being held in London next week to discuss which proposed change would be most beneficial to data centres. DatacenterDynamics reports that the conference will be held on 1 March at the BCS headquarters in London's Covent Garden area, and offers a full day of events including panel sessions, debates and a chance for proponents to make a case for both environmental proposals and their likely impact on data centres.

"The BCS is hosting what promises to be a very lively debate on the risks and benefits of operating under the UK government's CRC scheme or under the broader CCA," the website explains.

"Among the points to be argued are that the UK Carbon Reduction Commitment has driven many people to distraction trying to figure out what the impact (cost and brand impact) to their businesses might be as far as their data centre estate is concerned.

"The debate offers attendees the chance to present their views after they've listened to the facts."

As well as reducing a business' negative impact on the environment, green legislation can also help businesses to make significant savings by cutting energy costs. Many data centres across the UK already employ green technology and effective monitoring practices to help reduce their carbon footprint, but many others still need to come on board for the UK to reach government standards.
