M2M (machine-to-machine) technology and green initiatives go hand-in-hand, promoting efficiency and reducing the use of resources. Now, one cellular network operator is laying out specific ways M2M can help countries “go green.”
In July, Vodafone, www.vodafone.com, Berkshire, U.K., launched a global M2M service platform designed to help companies deploy and manage M2M projects. At the same time, Vodafone released a report it developed with Accenture Ltd., www.accenture.com, Hamilton, Bermuda, that explains how M2M can help cut down on carbon emissions. Called “Carbon Connections,” the report points to M2M as the enabler for a vast number of systems that can help the environment.
Some of the specific opportunities mentioned include what the report refers to as smart grid, smart cities, smart logistics, and smart manufacturing solutions. Vodafone says if these opportunities were put in place in the European Union (EU), the E.U. could save 2.4% of expected emission, or 113 million tons of CO2, in 2020. This might not seem like a lot, but it equates to 43 billion Euros in energy costs.
Most interestingly for the M2M world, the report says implementing these programs would require a billion mobile connections, 87% of which would be M2M. Whether or not this multitude of connections actually comes to pass by 2020, the report lays out an interesting view of what is possible with M2M.
