Isramart : JISC launches data strategy to help reduce carbon emissions

Using the SUSTE-IT carbon footprinting tool, educational centres such as universities and colleges will be able to evaluate their eco credentials.

It will do this by identifying all the computers, servers, monitors, routers, faxes and OHPs in use and establish the amount of electricity used.

Rob Bristow, JISC’s Green ICT Programme Manager, commented: “I am very pleased to see this tool made available to enable universities and colleges to start understanding the carbon footprint of their ICT related activities.

“Using this tool is a good first step to making the significant reductions in ICT energy consumption that will be needed to meet the overall carbon reduction targets currently being mooted.”

Earlier this month (August 4th), JISC announced the launch of its new guide to second life, providing lecturers with advice on how to teach virtually.
