Isra-Mart srl:Maersk: Global emissions deal is sink or swim for IMO

www.isra-mart.com

Isra-Mart srl news:

Failure to secure some form of deal to help make new ships more carbon efficient could see the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) lose its status as the industry's guiding body, according to a senior executive at one of the world's largest shipping companies.

Jacob Sterling, head of climate and environment at Maersk, told BusinessGreen the UN body has to come away from a meeting in July with agreement on preliminary steps towards cutting shipping's carbon emissions or risk seeing its negotiating role supplanted by the UN's climate change secretariat, the UNFCCC.

"In July [the IMO] is discussing and trying to agree a global efficiency standard for new ships – it's a first step, it's not radical or highly ambitious," he said. "But it is make or break for the IMO if it wants to play a role in the future of shipping."

The IMO has overseen the slow progress of negotiations designed to agree how to reduce emissions from the sector, which account for about four per cent of global emissions and are predicted to increase exponentially as global trade expands.

However, the body denied that the outcome of July talks, known as MEPC 62, would decide its future.

"The Kyoto Protocol says that countries should work through the IMO to address shipping emissions and I don't see that changing," an IMO spokeswomen told BusinessGreen. "We hope to get some sort of agreement in July, but until we have that meeting its impossible to speculate. If nothing is agreed, other organisations may decide to take specific action, but we cannot comment on what they decide to do."

The EU has threatened to bring shipping into its Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) from 2013 if a substantive deal is not agreed by the end of this year, increasing pressure on the IMO to move beyond technical improvements which do not address current vessels that could spend another 30 years on the ocean.

An IMO task force is meeting at the end of March to discuss potential market mechanisms, the outcome of which will be fed into the July talks.

Sterling insisted he was hopeful that some form of deal would be done in July, but insisted that ultimately a global agreement would be needed to stop individual regions implementing separate policies.

"The problem arises when there is one system in Europe, another in the US and a different one in Australia," Sterling said. "Then companies have to spend much too much time in administration rather than reducing CO2 emissions. We would like to see a global deal – a piecemeal approach all over the world would not be desirable."

Maersk ordered 10 new container ships this week that promise to substantially reduce emissions and fuel consumption, and Sterling is sure that the company's efforts to cut CO2 would see it profit from emissions regulations if applied globally.

"Regulations would be a benefit for us because we have already taken to investing to reduce CO2 emissions," he said. "With or without legislation it is good business for us to reduce costs and improve environmental performance... as bunker prices are high and continuing to rise."

In related news, South Korea, a country that also envisages demand increasing for energy-efficient, low-carbon vessels, today announced it would spend 300 billion won (£165m) over the coming decade to develop technology for "green" ships.

Maersk's order of 10 Triple-E ships, with an option for 20 more, from Korean firm Daewoo may prove the first of many orders for the country's seven shipyards after the government set a target of $50.9bn (£31.5bn) in shipbuilding orders this year, 35 per cent more than 2010.

South Korea's Ministry of Knowledge Economy added in a statement that two thirds of the new investment would come from government funds, with the remainder sourced from the private sector.

Isra-Mart srl:Google-backed firm promises to Transphorm AC:DC technology

www.isra-mart.com

Isra-Mart srl news:

Google has led a $20m funding round to support a US startup that promises to extend the range of electric cars and increase the amount of electricity produced by solar panels.

Google joined with other investors to help raise a total of $39m for Transphorm, a California-based firm which claims its technology can reduce – by up to 90 per cent – the energy lost from converting the alternate current (AC) that comes out of conventional sockets to the direct current (DC) that powers most electrical goods.

Around 10 per cent of energy lost in the US dissipates as a result of inefficient converters, such as the phone chargers that heat up as they charge devices.

Google said Transphorm's technology had the potential to save enough energy to supply the whole west coast of America if adopted across the country.

The company said that saving electricity wasted during conversion should make electric vehicles go further by eliminating the need to cool electric motors, while also improving the output of solar panels and limiting energy waste in buildings.

Slashing the energy bills of companies with vast datacentres is another potential benefit, making new investor Google a natural customer.

At the launch event at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, Transphorm chief executive Umesh Mishra said the company's technology made use of semiconductor material gallium nitride, often used in LED lighting, rather than the silicon that is typically used in converters.

"The current solution, which is based on silicon, is a solution which has reached its limit in high-voltage power conversion," he said. "We can't eke any more efficiency out of this technology. The time is now to do something different and affect the 10 per cent of wasted energy that occurs in power conversion."

With funding from Google Ventures, Google's venture capital arm, and a number of investment houses, Transphorm expects to launch products later this year, initially targeting computer data markets.

Isra-Mart srl:Huhne faces heat from solar review critics

www.isra-mart.com

Isra-Mart srl news:

The battle between the government and the solar industry looks set to intensify after energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne today offered a defence of his department's decision to launch a fast-track review of incentives offered to large solar installations.

Writing in the Western Morning News and Western Daily Press to accompany a visit to the south west, the region most likely to be affected by the government's plan to cut feed-in tariff support for solar farms, Huhne insisted the proposed cuts were necessary to protect incentives for smaller installations and limit upward pressure on energy bills.

"The money for FITs comes from you and [me]: it's a cost which is added to energy bills," he wrote. "When the previous government started FITs, it never predicted or allowed for large-scale solar installations so early on in the scheme. But such interest, especially in the south west, has the real risk of skewing the costs of the whole scheme, which in turn will push up the costs on energy bills and hog the money that was meant for householders."

He said eight solar farms had already been granted planning permission in the south west and an estimated 20 more were in the pipeline, adding that each 5MW solar farm could deny 1,500 homes from claiming feed-in tariffs for solar panels on their roofs.

"Even if only half of these [planned solar farms] go ahead and start claiming FITs, then nearly a fifth of the scheme's projected costs for the next financial year will have already been spent, leaving hundreds of homes, small businesses and communities without," he wrote. "If we let large solar installations continue unabated, then the money will run out and it will run out more quickly."

But solar industry insiders remain furious at the government's decision to review feed-in tariffs for all installations with more than 50kW capacity, including mid-sized rooftop installations that are a fraction of the size of the largest solar farms.

Some critics are now privately accusing the government of exaggerating the scale of the threat presented by solar farms and reneging on a promise to announce a "trigger for early review".

Recently released figures from Ofgem suggest that during the first nine months of the scheme, just £6.2m has been paid out to generators, against the government's projection that spend for the first year of the scheme would be £30m.

BusinessGreen has also obtained documents suggesting the government originally budgeted up to £51m for the first year of the scheme, while a DECC spokeswoman confirmed that even with cuts agreed as part of last year's spending review, the government has budgeted £900m of cumulative spend for the scheme between 2010 and 2014.

The disparity between the £6.2m paid to date under the feed-in tariff and the first-year budget of between £30m and £51m has prompted outrage from some within the industry, who are adamant that there is little evidence of the "solar gold rush" the government has claimed it is trying to counteract.

There is also anger at the decision to renege on commitments made by climate change minister Greg Barker in the House of Commons that the department would announce a "trigger" point at which an early review of the scheme would be enacted ahead of the first scheduled review in 2012.

A DECC spokeswoman said the government had decided to dispense with announcing a trigger point for an early review as it "just wanted to get on with it" and provide the industry with earlier certainty.

She also insisted that government projections suggested a "gold rush" was underway and as such solar farms presented a "threat" to the overall feed-in tariff budget.

"The evidence we have seen shows there are solar farms in the pipeline, and we are aware of more being planned," she said. "If we break the £900m budget, it goes on people's bills and we have a duty of care [to stop that happening]. We have just come out of the recession and we have to be fiscally responsible."

Isra-Mart srl:Falsche EEG-Förderanreize für Biogas-Strom

www.isra-mart.com

Isra-Mart srl news:

Isra-Mart srl:IMGB Doosan.

www.isra-mart.com

Isra-Mart srl news:

In fiecare zi avem rapoarte in privinta consumului din ziua anterioara”, a declarat d-l Costel Cirstea.

In raport cu vechea centrala, eficienta energetica in producerea aburului a crescut, in noua centrala, cu circa 30%, a explicat d-l Costel Cirstea.

- inlocuirea cazanelor de abur din centrala termica, generand o economie de combustibil;
- instalarea unui Sistem de Management Energetic care monitorizeaza consumul de electricitate si de gaze naturale;

Beneficii:
- reducerea consumurilor specific de energie electrica si gaze naturale cu, in medie, 20%
- reducerea emisiilor de CO2
