CSX Corp. plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 8 percent by 2011. The company’s plan is part of its participation in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders Program, a voluntary program for businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The plan calls for the railroad operator to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 2.4 million tons. CSX serves and has offices in Tampa.
“Freight rail is the most fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly surface transportation option,” said Michael Ward, president and chief executive officer. “We are pleased to enhance these benefits with our firm commitment to reduce CSX’s carbon footprint.”
CSX plans to reduce carbon emissions in its non-railroad operations by using office space more efficiently, improving heating and air conditioning systems, and installing energy-efficient lighting and automatic computer shutdown software.
