Spain will this Friday start publishing real-time data on carbon emissions from its power sector.
REE, owner of the Spanish electricity grid, will publish the data on its website - www.ree.es.
The system, which is the only one of its kind anywhere in the world, according to REE, will allow “anyone to determine levels of emissions from the electricity sector with precision and in real time”.
REE's intention is to provide “more transparency” and to show “how emissions vary from day to day according to demand and the availability (of supply) ,” said Luis Atienza, the company president.
Real-time information on the make-up of the generating mix will also be available in the form of a pie chart.
The power sector currently accounts for 28.2 per cent of Spain's CO2 emissions.
