Isramart : NZ farmers accept carbon trading as inevitable

New Zealand farmers say they’re resigned to being included in a carbon trading scheme.

New Zealand’s planned trading scheme will include direct agriculture emissions from 2015.

An estimated 90 per cent of the country’s farmers object to plan, claiming it will hurt export competitiveness.

But David Broome, from the Federated Farmers of New Zealand, says there’s no hope of the Government changing its position.

“We’ve tried to fight the good fight here, but there’s a very strong determination from the government to plug ahead and put farm animal emissions into the ETS,” he says.

“Our problem with that is we’re really focused on trying to make that the least impact upon New Zealand’s farmers.”
