Isra-Mart srl news:
Independent MP Tony Windsor has challenged BHP Billiton to disclose its position on the carbon tax issue, while also urging industry critics opposed to the tax scheme to instead suggest alternative emissions-cutting strategies, according to a report by The Australian.
Although BHP has been supportive of the carbon tax, Mr Windsor's comments come following BHP chief executive Marius Kloppers' warning that Australia's go-it-alone strategy on carbon pricing would weigh heavily on the country's high-polluting exporters who will have to compete against rivals not subject to a carbon tax.
Mr Windsor said that in meetings with BHP and other industry representatives he has been told repeatedly the sector wants a better strategy for pricing carbon emissions, but that he has not seen industry suggestions on how to improve the current plan.
The Gillard government has been swamped with calls from industries and unions demanding exclusions, increased levels of compensation and better links to international action on climate change, though yesterday Climate Change Minister Greg Combet said a legally binding agreement signed by multiple countries would be extremely difficult to secure and enforce, according to The Australian.
