A Federal Government report says the Carbon Farming Initiative will cut more than 10 per cent of carbon emissions from land-use by 2020.
The Government hopes to have the Carbon Farming Initiative up and running by July. It will reward landowners for growing trees and sequestering carbon dioxide in their soil.
A report from the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency says the plan could cut up to 15 megatonnes of carbon emissions by 2020.
Corey Watts from The Climate Institute says the Carbon Farming Initiative is a good start to helping reduce emissions.
"The projections that are made by the Government that they released recently suggest that by 2020, it could cut more than 10 per cent of the land sector's emissions."
"The land sector is farming, forestry and other land uses. That is about 25 per cent of Australia's emissions. But at the moment we've got no policy to attend that one quarter of emissions," Mr Watts says.
