Isramart news:
Set in the heart of beautiful Shanghai is China’s first carbon neutral hotel, URBN Hotels Shanghai. The country is known to have one of the largest carbon footprints in the world and this is a great step in leading the way to creating a new trend in China. And just last week, URBN Hotels Shanghai, also scooped up the AFA Asia Award for “Leading Green Business Hotel of Asia”.
Constructed using 100% locally made or reclaimed materials with installations of energy-efficient heating and cooling systems are some of the key ingredients to building this Shanghai luxury hotel. URBN also uses all organic products from fabrics to cleaning products in efforts to bring a fresh perspective to the hotel industry. Everything from their employee commutes to the energy consumption is tracked to through investment into a clean energy project. Thus, URBN hotels have no net effect on the environment.
One of the key philosophies to URBN’s success is that they are all about giving back. Twice a year URBN holds an eco fair to showcase environmentally-friendly businesses and retailers. It’s their way of supporting responsible, conscious consumption. A great treat for visitors to the hotel is that they can participate in their ‘Million Tree Project’ which in partnership with roots and shoots, URBN Hotels Shanghai purchase trees in a desertified inner Mongolia forest to offset carbon emissions. Through encouraging friends, partners and guests to purchase trees, the hotel hopes to grow an URBN forest of 2,000 trees.
An eco getaway in China is no longer impossible and hopefully this growing trend will take off and will influence others like it in Asia to do the same.
