Isramart : Ottawa Police reduce carbon emissions

Isramart news:
he Ottawa Police Fleet Services section is taking great strides to reduce the carbon footprint left by the service through the introduction of a new “Green” patrol unit which will help reduce unnecessary idling.

Now available at Central Division, the unit dubbed A3-2996 is equipped with a variety of features that not only reduce idling, but also save fuel, extend the life span of the vehicle, reduce immediate toxins and cut down on maintenance which is based on engine hours.

Attached to the emergency roof lights of the vehicle is a solar panel which can be used to charge the auxiliary batteries. These batteries are used to run the in-car laptop, radio, emergency lights and other equipment without having to start the car. The vehicle can also be plugged in to an electrical outlet to keep the batteries at peak charge. In addition to these features, the vehicle also has an auxiliary battery voltage monitor and a remote start and shutdown system. These mechanisms enable the vehicle to be shut off automatically if it has been in park for three minutes. Also, if the auxiliary batteries become drained, the vehicle will automatically start and operate the vehicle for 10 minutes to allow the batteries to recharge. The heating and cooling systems in the unit also have an automatic function built in to allow the unit to activate the heater or air conditioner for 10 minutes to maintain a comfortable interior temperature.
