Isramart : Climate efforts waning: UNFCCC

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has released a report concluding that carbon emissions in its member states rose by 3.9 per cent between 2000 and 2007, despite efforts to curb emissions.

Although the 41 member states’ emissions decreased by 3.9 per cent in the period between 1990 and 2007, emissions figures then rose from 17,600 tonnes to 18,100 tonnes between 2000 and 2007.

The energy industry was shown to be the largest contributor to carbon emissions – a contribution which rose by 5.6 per cent between 1990 and 2007. The transport industry had the largest increase in emissions, rising by 17.9 per cent in the same period.

Australia’s total carbon emissions increased by 30 per cent in the 17 years, according to the report.
